چکیده

[1] Determining the fate of atmospheric N deposited in forest ecosystems is essential to understanding the ecological impact of increased anthropogenic N deposition. We hypothesize that a significant fraction of soil nitrate (dry deposited HNO3 and wet deposited NO3 ) in northern Michigan is derived from atmospheric deposition. To test this idea, soil, rainfall, and cloud water were sampled in a temperate forest in northern Lower Michigan. The fraction of the soil solution NO3 − pool directly from atmospheric deposition was quantified using the natural isotopic tracer, DO. Our results show that on average 9% of the soil solution NO3 − is unprocessed (no microbial turnover) N derived directly from the atmosphere. This points to the potential importance of anthropogenic N deposition and contributes to the long‐standing need to improve our understanding of the impacts of atmospheric nitrogen processing and deposition on forest ecosystems and forest productivity. Changing atmospheric <supscr>14</supscr>C and the record of deep water paleoventilation ages

We propose a new calculation method to better estimate the deep water ventilation age from benthic-planktonic foraminifera 14C ages. Our study is motivated by the fact that changes in atmospheric A14C through time can cause contemporary benthic and planktonic foraminifera to have different initial A14C values. This effect can cause spurious ventilation age changes tobe interpreted from the geol...

Positionally dependent <supscr>15</supscr>N fractionation factors in the UV photolysis of N<subscr>2</subscr>O determined by high resolution FTIR spectroscopy

Positionally dependent fractionation factors for the photolysis of isotopomers of N20 in natural abundance have been determined by high resolution FTIR spectroscopy at three photolysis wavelengths. Fractionation factors show clear lSN position and photolysis wavelength dependence and are in qualitative agreement with theoretical models but are twice as large. The fractionation factors increase ...

Carbon and oxygen isotope ratios of ecosystem respiration along an Oregon conifer transect: preliminary observations based on small-flask sampling.

Isotope ratio analyses of atmospheric CO(2) at natural abundance have significant potential for contributing to our understanding of photosynthetic and respiration processes in forest ecosystems. Recent advances in isotope ratio mass spectrometry allow for rapid, on-line analysis of small volumes of CO(2) in air, and open new research opportunities at the ecophysiological, whole-organism, and a...

Drivers of atmospheric nitrate processing and export in forested catchments

Increased deposition of reactive atmospheric N has resulted in the nitrogen saturation of many forested catchments worldwide. Isotope-based studies from multiple forest sites report low proportions (mean5 10%) of unprocessed atmospheric nitrate in streams during baseflow, regardless of N deposition or nitrate export rates. Given similar proportions of atmospheric nitrate in baseflow across a va...

Oxygen and nitrogen isotopic composition of nitrate in commercial fertilizers, nitric acid, and reagent salts.

Nitrate is a key component of synthetic fertilizers that can be beneficial to crop production in agro-ecosystems, but can also cause damage to natural ecosystems if it is exported in large amounts. Stable isotopes, both oxygen and nitrogen, have been used to trace the sources and fate of nitrate in various ecosystems. However, the oxygen isotope composition of synthetic and organic nitrates is ...
